Having just come back from driving one of the very first new BMW i8s in Pebble Beach, we can attest that people are willing to do anything to get their hands on it.

Take the fellow in the Rolls who offered us cash down for our press car—while stuck in traffic on U.S. 1.

So it’s no surprise that a one-of-a-kind edition of the ridiculously cool car just sold for $825,000—roughly the price of six factory i8s.

The incredible result was achieved at Gooding & Company’s auction of the vehicle, presided over by Jay Leno and dapper BMW North America President and CEO Ludwig Willisch.

Every cent went to Pebble Beach Company Foundation, which raises funds for Monterey County youth and distributes grants spanning the arts, athletics, environmental sciences, educational organizations and community programs.

We had a chance to examine it up close at BMW’s bash welcoming VIPs to Pebble Beach at its posh private villa.

The i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition features BMW Individual Frozen Grey Metallic exterior paint, Dalbergia Brown leather upholstery with BMW i Blue contrast stitching, special badging and signature plaque, and even a set of custom Louis Vuitton luggage.

Cheap at twice the price…
