Our intrepid editor traveled to the incomparable Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California at the wheel of an equally impressive BMW i8. Read on for further adventures…
The i8 had us feeling pretty good in Pebble Beach.
There were few cars to rival it on the road, and as we arrived at the Laguna Seca racetrack for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the parking attendant looked suitably impressed.
As each pedigreed classic pulled up, he would question the driver about its age, provenance, power, etc.
And when we rolled up in the i8 he asked, “What year is that? 2020?”
But on this occasion, our attention was focused on some rather more classic BMWs.
To be specific, the pair of beautifully restored M1s the legendary marque brought along for the day’s racing.
They wowed the crowd and reinforced our belief that few other supercars of the era can come close.
However, we did manage to tear ourselves away finally and consider some other cars.
As usual, the real action was behind the scenes at the paddocks, where classic race cars rested between contests.
Allowing us to get these shots to share with you.
And as usual, vintage Porsches dominated the field, with everything from 906 Carrera 6s to 911s of every stripe and a few others besides.
Which we duly ogled as we wandered through the thickets of mechanical virtuosity.
Which included a Ferrari and Maserati or two, an irresistible aluminum-bodied Lotus 11, the new Lightweight Jaguar E-Type and even a peppy little Morgan Plus 4.
And having seen the sights, we headed back to the BMW paddock and our first love, the M1.
Amid the roaring, smoking engines, it stood serene, beguiling every spectator.
Its wedge shape, long, low lines and futuristic aesthetic evoked the i8 in our eyes, and though we could find few to agree with this theory, we still think it holds water.
And so with that thought we navigated away from the track to pursue our Pebble Beach adventures, of which more is to come.
So peruse these pix while awaiting the next installment, and know that we did it all for you…
