One of the most important Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwings” ever—used by none other than Stirling Moss for course reconnaissance prior to his stupendous victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia driving a 300SLR—will be auctioned by Bonhams at its inaugural Mercedes-Benz Sale on July 12 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson credited the careful recon with giving them the edge needed to win the legendary race.

Before that, the car was displayed by Daimler-Benz at the 1954 Paris Salon de l’Automobile exhibition and was the 1955 London Motor Show car displayed at Olympia as well as the 1955 Autocar magazine road-test car.

James Knight, group motoring director at Bonhams, calls it “arguably the most historic 300SL Gullwing extant.”

What he means is, prepare to pay a f**king fortune if you want to make like Moss…
