Just the other day, we told you about the profitable, pleasurable partnership between fast-driving playboy James Hunt and Lord Hesketh, British peer turned racing impresario.

Now an ultrarare example of the Hesketh 308, the bespoke racing car Hunt drove during the 1974 Formula 1 championship season, is coming up for auction at RM Auctions’ Monaco sale in May.

Only four Hesketh 308 chassis were built; the one on offer is the very first, which Hunt drove with varying success in several races.

Eventually, Hunt scored his first World Championship win at the wheel of a Hesketh 308 in the 1975 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

RM expects to see up to about $1 million change hands for this 308…
