Given that DRIVEN‘s main HQ is a mere 45 minutes away from Portland, Maine, we figured we knew pretty much everything about the picturesque town.
Exploring the pleasures of Portland, Maine, with L.L. Bean Signature
After all, what surprises can a city of a mere 65,000 people hold for an ex–New Yorker?
Leave it to L.L. Bean to open our eyes—they’ve been here a lot longer.

Last week, the legendary outdoor outfitters invited a cadre of A-list aesthetes to Maine to experience “the modern New England” that inspires Bean’s stylish Signature collection, a heady mix of heritage styles and modern fits.

We tagged along for the ride and found even more to explore in our own backyard, so to speak, and also got an inside look at the iconic L.L. Bean store and the storied brand’s manufacturing process.

The guest list read like a Who’s Who of modern men’s style arbiters: photographers Justin Bridges and William Yan; Selectism’s Jeff Carvalho; dandified bartender Bobby Hicks; Grandlife gadabout Steven Rojas; Mordechai Rubinstein, aka the famed Mister Mort; Isaac Hindin-Miller of Isaac Likes; the authoritative Mickey Sery; Canadian cool cat Marcus Troy; and Closet Freaks’ Anthony Urbano.
A Who’s Who of men’s style arbiters came to town
From our home bases at the Portland Regency Hotel (top photo) and the Portland Harbor Hotel, we went on a tour to sample the ”sights, sounds and tastes of the Maine coast and working waterfront” that inspires Signature.
Portland’s In’Finiti distillery and gastropub
Luckily, that included some of the best bars and restaurants in Portland’s considerable portfolio—the amazing new Portland Hunt + Alpine Club, the award-winning Eventide Oyster Co., waterfront gastropub and distillery In’Finiti, buzzing lounge The North Point and one of our favorite restaurants in the world Fore Street.
Touring some of Portland’s best bars and eateries
We also visited Portland’s burgeoning Bayside ‘hood, home to the likes of Bunker Brewing Company, Maine Craft Distilling, the Urban Farm Fermentory and much more, as well as Downtown men’s grooming mecca/modern apothecary Portland General Store.

All of which, we would like to point out, are open to the public, so feel free to make your way thither and seek your own inspiration.
