The other day, we mentioned that Colin Chapman’s 1970s time capsule Range Rover had been put up for sale, and it got us curious about the enigmatic Englishman who founded Lotus.

An engineer by training, Chapman gave the now iconic company its start after a brief stint in the Royal Air Force, and propelled it to success using technology derived from aeronautics.

Chapman died of a heart attack in 1982 at the age of 54 while embroiled in the scandal enveloping his business partner at the time, one John DeLorean.

The last Lotus he would get to see roll off the line was the Esprit, which stayed in production for an astonishing 28 years…
