Next up in our look at RM Auctions’ phenomenal Amelia Island sale on March 9: a 1970 Porsche 908/3, one of the eminent marque’s most iconic racers.
In 1970, its first year of action, the 908/3 scored victories in the two races it was designed to win: the Targa Florio and the 1,000-km Nürburgring race.
Then in 1971, it did it again, and remained in competition for an unbelievable 10 years.
Its immediate predecessor, the 908/2, was already revered thanks to the fact that Steve McQueen drove one to second place in the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring.
One of 13 built, the car RM is offering has no specific racing glory to its name, but being the factory test-chassis it could still bring in up to $1.7 million.
It’s worth that much for its dashing blue-and-orange Gulf livery alone…
