Most of us have toyed with the idea of buying an electric car at one time or another.

Formula E just ordered 42 of them.

That’s the outfit that’s planning to launch an all-electric Formula 1 series in 2014.

So far, Rome and Rio de Janeiro have signed up to host races.

The series will be conducted under the auspices of the FIA, just like the real F1—as soon as the governing body decides what the regulations should be for an electric version.

The 42 cars will be built by McLaren in conjunction with Spark Racing Technology; a prototype is pictured above.

With McLaren on board, Formula E is bound to attract serious interest.

The 2014 inaugural race is slated to feature 10 urban races in all, with four cars available to each of 10 teams.

Electric racing through the streets of Brooklyn, anyone…
