In 1987, when BMW unveiled its new ultra-luxe 750i sedan, replacing what had been a six-cylinder engine with one twice as big in the 7-series at the Geneva Motor Show, it was the first German 12-cylinder luxury model to be offered in half a century.

Twenty-five years on the Bavarian marque is celebrating what became the gold standard for high-end automotive engineering wrapped in uncompromising luxury.

At the time, BMW’s development chief was quoted as saying: “The engineers wanted to go for nothing but the best of everything, and we didn’t try to stop them.”

We’ll drink to that being a damn good thing…
