The other day, we told you about the Journey of Discovery, which will see a Land Rover set off on a 50-day, 8,000-mile trek from the UK to Beijing, China.
The inspiration for the epic jaunt comes from a series of similar expeditions undertaken in the 1950s by some adventurous university men, beginning with the Oxford and Cambridge Trans-Africa Expedition in 1954.

According to some accounts, the whole thing actually began with a bet about which color vehicle could do it the fastest.
The essential equipment included some rather elaborate tea sets, several bottles of scotch and a full complement of tweed jackets.
