From René Lacoste to Bobby J0nes, the clothing they wore during competition became de rigeur for those in love with the Ivy League look.

Above international polo player Peter Perkins takes a smoke break straight out of a Ralph Lauren ad at the U.S. vs. Mexico match in 1946.

Of course the Duke of Windsor had a profound influence on men’s style as well, adapting many items of natty athletic wear into his wardrobe.
