Born on this day in 1924 with more sprezzatura than any man on Earth before or since: the great Marcello Mastroianni.
His role as a tabloid columnist in 1960′s La Dolce Vita (above) is his best known, but far from only notable, film.
He starred in a number of other Fellini classics and made many movies with the world’s most beautiful actresses, including 14 films with Sophia Loren alone.

He brought his incomparable elegance to every one, and students of style studied his every expression, smoke and scarf knot.
He was sadly taken from us in 1996, but his spirit – and sprezz – lives on among his many disciples, admirers an imitators.
