Born on this day in Victoria, Australia in 1957: the coolest, baddest, darkest, maddest man in rock & roll – Nick Cave.

From his early days as frontman for post-punk provocateurs The Birthday Party, Nick’s main preoccupation clearly wasn’t fortune or fame.

No, that’d be love, sex, religion, death and violence, mixed in equal parts and mainlined in a seedy hotel room with a black-eyed beauty heating the spoon.

Happy birthday to the the coolest, baddest, darkest, maddest man in rock & roll

In 1984 he formed the Bad Seeds, with fourteen albums to follow; lived in Berlin, Brazil and on a houseboat; fathered some children in various locales; made a few movie cameos; did some solo work; and wrote a few cool books to boot.

This photo was taken in London in April 1997 by Joe Dilworth, not long after the release of his album Murder Ballads.

Today, as he turns 54, he’s no doubt just getting warmed up….
