Today marks an important occasion in the annals of debonairness: George Hamilton‘s birthday.

The preternaturally tanned, suave star was born on this day in 1939 in Memphis and spent part of his formative years in Arkansas, but found his spiritual home when he moved to California.

The son of a bandleader, you could say showbusiness was imprinted in his plasma.

In 1962, at the age of 23, he was already a bona fide movie star with nine films to his credit including Where the Boys Are and All the Fine Young Cannibals, loosely based on the life of Chet Baker.

Here he’s pictured that year at his mansion in Beverly Hills, surrounded by the trappings of success including a classic Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Despite occasional forays into frommage, style-wise he has always been a past master of casual elegance; the trim blazer, khakis and canvas sneaks he’s sporting here are utterly au courant today – as is his taste in cars.

His savoir faire has never wavered, and having met the man we can attest it’s not an act.

At the age of 72, having done everything amusing on the entire planet, including dating four Miss Worlds and a First Lady, one might think the ultimate playboy would like some time off.

Not a bit of it; this fall Gorgeous George will take to the stage once again, for the national tour of the Tony-winning revival of La Cage aux Folles.

You can’t keep a cool man down….
