A rare 1958 BMW Abbate V8 speedboat overflowing with Dolce Vita style has been added to the lineup at Bonhams’ “Power by BMW” sale in Munich this fall.
One of only two ever made, the rare runabout is expected to fetch up to about $350,000.
Racing driver and engineer Helm Gloeckler first had the idea to use a BMW engine to power a stylish speedboat in the 1950s.

A keen powerboat driver and water skier, he decided the combination of an ultra-light BMW all aluminum V8 engine and an elegant Italian mahogany runabout would be unbeatable.
Gloeckler partnered with Giulio Abbate, a member of one of Italy’s most famous boat building families on the craft.
They converted a specially-tuned tuned engine from a BMW 507 to propel the high performance vessel, which became an admired show-piece for BMW technology.
Think of it as an Italian supermodel with a German brain….
