Thumbing through the catalog for Bonhams‘ Le Grandes Marques a Monaco sale taking place in Monte Carlo on May 20th, we nearly spit up our Scotch when we came to this 1959 Fiat 600 Jolly Beach Car that belonged to none other than Gianni Agnelli.
Agnelli of course was the dashing founder of Fiat and grandfather of our favorite Felliniesque fop Lapo Elkann, whom the NY Times just pictured with a new Fiat created in the image of the one here (see below).
A consummate playboy, we imagine Agnelli used the stylish ride for both his family and the many mistresses he entertained aboard his yacht Agneta, fodder for the tabloids at the time.

The Jolly was a luxe, limited edition variant of the 600 that Fiat shipped to Italian design house Carrozzeria Ghia in 1958 for custom coachwork.
Featuring wicker seats and the option of a fringed top to shield its occupants from the sun, it cost twice as much as the stock 600 and was much favored by pleasure-seekers and personalities of the day including Aristotle Onassis; even LBJ had one.
Although Agnelli only owned the Jolly offered here for a relatively short time, it fairly reeks of La Dolce Vita – and if you ask us the thing is a goddamned steal at $35,000 – $50,000.
