The 64th Cannes film festival kicks off today with the usual selection of impenetrable foreign movies and impossibly glamorous goings-on.
Ineffably cooler than the crass orgy of ass-kissing known as the Oscars, Cannes had its heyday back in the ’50s and ’60s when giants walked the Earth, cinematically speaking.
In Cannes back in the day they also drove around in stylish cars, which is where we come in.
Two new books throw a spotlight on that era; the first, Cannes Cinema, contains some classic snaps of style greats, like Mr. Michael Caine here in town to promote The Ipcress File in 1965 (see more at Gilt MANual).

The other, Stars and Cars of the ’50s, isn’t exclusively focused on Cannes but contains several scenes from the fest, including the one below of Gina Lollobrigida emerging from a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith in front of the Carlton Hotel in 1954.
Stay tuned for more from Stars; meanwhile take some style tips from the consummately cool Caine and you might just find yourself getting into a Rolls-Royce with a girl who looks like Ms. Lollobrigida come next May.
