Dennis Hopper will forever be associated with the great American road thanks to Easy Rider.

Less well known is the fact that the talented actor was also an accomplished photographer; many of his images were of course captured on his travels.

In the 1960s Hopper toted his camera to film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, and driving on freeways.

Along the way he photographed “movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends and complete strangers”.

The results are compiled in Dennis Hopper: Photographs 1961 – 1967, new from Taschen (an earlier limited artist’s edition quickly sold out).

Here are a few of our favorite snaps, including Hopper himself sporting a pair of aviator shades and his pal Paul Newman catching some rays.

Clear a space on the shelf right now, in other words.
